Arsène Wenger has believed in Alex's ability ever since he plucked him from Bastia in the summer of 2005. The Frenchman's faith was vindicated last season as Alex showed just why the boss rates him so highly.
First-team opportunities were few and far between for the Cameroon international in his first two years with the Club but he made 15 appearances last term and would probably have made more if an injury had not sidelined him in the Spring.
Alex impressed during Arsenal's run to the Carling Cup Semi-Finals, notably at Blackburn in the Quarter-Finals, and earned a late call-up to the Cameroon squad at the Africa Cup of Nations. The young Gunner excelled in Ghana and, although Cameroon fell short, Alex was named in the team of the tournament.
An injury slowed Alex's momentum on his return to England but he barely put a foot wrong on his return to action in a vital title clash at Old Trafford in April and went on to play every minute of Arsenal's last five Premier League fixtures.
Alex is comfortable in a holding central midfield role - he impressed there during a loan spell with Charlton in 2007 - but his finest moments came at centre-half last term. No doubt Alex will be pushing for a first-team place when he returns from the Olympics this season.
